Description
This is a VirtualMec simulation of a ‘Figure-of-eight Braiding Machine’ designed by Graham Jost.

The original model uses a Stuart Borill 13 teeth bevel gear in combination with a standard 26 teeth bevel gear (part 30) to give a 2:1 ratio. This was needed to cope with the 8 ply cotton used in braiding. Builders may have to tinker with this ratio if they use other sized threads.
Driving bands are not available in VirtualMec and where the original model design shows three pulleys being driven direct from adjacent axles I have added 3 rubber pulley collars (part 23c) to illustrate these positions.
in VirtualMec it is not possible to bend axle rods and instead of a curved 11½” rod I have used two 2” rods, one 6½” rod and two handrail couplings (part 136a) in its place; it is not possible to make the necessary bends to formed slotted strips and I have used four 3½” perforated strips (bent to shape) in their place.
Items not available in VirtualMec (wood rollers (part 106), 5 hole couplings (part 63g), 6” Hollow Plastic rods (part P67), a Stuart Borrill 13 teeth Bevel Gear and the non Meccano 6½” x 11½” wooden board) have been simulated or substituted as detailed below.
The bobbin spindles comprise of 2 Bush wheels without grub screws and 3 plastic washer spacers (part 38a) and should be wrapped in duct tape in order to be dismounted as a single unit from their supporting axles.
Builders should therefore make the following alterations to the VirtualMec Parts List.
Remove:

1 x Part 14 Used in curved rod simulation
2 x Part 17 Used in curved rod simulation
1 x Part 23a Used in place of ⅜” diameter pulley (Part 23r)
1 x 30a Used in place of Stuart Borrill 13 teeth bevel gear
55 x 38a Used in hollow plastic rod simulation
1 x Part 63 Used in 5 hole coupling simulation in Waggler
1 x Part 63d Used in 5 hole coupling simulation in Waggler
10 x Part 71e Used in wooden board simulation
5 x Part 75a Used in wooden board simulation
2 x Part 136a Used in curved rod simulation
4 x Part 187e Used in wood roller simulation
2 x Part 216 Used in wood roller simulation

Add:
1 x Part 13 11½” Axle Rod curved to shape
1 x Part 23r ⅜” diameter pulley
1 x Part 63g 5 hole coupling (you could also use a 4 hole coupling)
3 x Part P67 6” Hollow Plastic Rod (cut in half to produce 5 bobbin mount sleeves)
2 x Part 106 Wood roller
4 x Part 215 Formed Slotted strips (with additional bending)
1 x 044 Stuart Borrill 13 teeth Bevel Gear
1 x wooden board (6½” x 11½”)
